Pruning is the cheapest tree work you will ever buy, because it is the work that stops you needing the expensive kind. Limbs cleared off a roof do not tear shingles in a storm. Weight taken off a heavy side does not become the reason a trunk splits.

Timing cuts to the species, not to the calendar
Different trees want pruning at different times, and cutting at the wrong point in the year is how a healthy tree gets stressed. Heavy pruning during the hardest part of a Lowcountry summer, when the tree is already under heat load, is a good way to set it back.
Palms in particular get over pruned constantly around here. Stripping the fronds back to a narrow spike looks tidy for a season and weakens the palm, because those fronds are what the tree is feeding on. We take the dead and the hazardous and leave the tree what it needs.

When is the best time to prune?
It depends on the species. Deadwood and anything hazardous can come out at any point in the year. Structural and heavy pruning is better timed to the tree, which is part of what we work out on the walkthrough.
How much can be taken off at once?
Less than most people expect. Removing too much of a live crown in one go stresses a tree badly. Where a tree needs a lot of work, spreading it over more than one visit gets a better result.
Can you get limbs off my roof and gutters?
Yes, and it is one of the most common calls we get. Limbs over a roof drop debris into gutters constantly and become a real problem in a storm.
Do you prune palms?
Yes. We take dead fronds and anything hazardous. We do not strip palms back to a spike, because it looks severe and it weakens the tree.
