A stump left behind after a removal is not a neutral thing. It is a trip hazard, an obstacle every time the lawn gets cut, and on an island with this much moisture it becomes a soft, insect friendly mass sitting in the middle of a yard.
Grinding takes it below grade so the area becomes usable ground again. On Hilton Head that usually means turf or a bed goes back over it, and how deep the stump is ground decides whether that works.
What grinding includes

Access is the variable on island properties
On most Hilton Head lots the question is not whether a stump can be ground but whether the machine can get to it. Narrow side setbacks, courtyard walls, pool enclosures and plantation fencing all decide which grinder is usable, and that is the single biggest driver of what a stump costs here.
There is a second thing worth knowing before anyone starts. Island properties are densely irrigated and irrigation lines run shallow. A grinder that meets a lateral line turns a stump job into an irrigation repair, so we locate what we can before we start rather than after.

How deep do you grind?
Below grade, and deep enough for whatever is going back over it. If you are laying sod or planting a bed there, tell us, because that changes how far down we take it.
Do I need a permit to grind a stump on Hilton Head?
Grinding a stump from a tree that has already come down is a different question from removing a protected tree, which does require a Natural Resources Permit. If the tree is still standing, ask us about the permit rules before anything is cut. The Town's information line is 843-341-4757.
Can you get a grinder into a courtyard or behind a gate?
Often, but not always, and it is worth us looking before you count on it. Access is what decides the price here and occasionally decides whether the job is possible at all.
What happens to the grindings?
Your choice. We can haul them off, or rake them back into the hole and level them, which is fine if nothing is going to be planted there.
