Sod is the fastest way to turn a thin, patchy or washed out island yard into a finished lawn, and on Hilton Head it is often the only practical answer, because seed struggles to establish in sand that dries out between waterings.
It is also the job where preparation decides the outcome. Turf laid onto unprepared island ground looks right for about three weeks, then goes patchy wherever the roots never moved down into the soil. The part nobody sees is the part that determines whether the lawn is still there next summer.

The turf goes down and you get the watering schedule in writing, since that part is now in your hands.
Why island sod fails, when it fails
Almost every failed sod lawn we get called to look at on the island failed for one of two reasons, and neither of them is the turf. The first is that it was laid on ground nobody prepared, so the roots sat in a mat on top of compacted sand and never went anywhere.
The second is water in the first fortnight. Sandy island ground drains fast, and new sod on sand needs watering more often than a homeowner who has laid sod somewhere else would expect. A property where nobody is present during those first two weeks is the most common way an install that was done correctly still dies, which is why we would rather schedule the job around when you or an irrigation system can actually keep to it.

What kind of grass works on Hilton Head?
Warm season turf chosen for your specific light and salt exposure. A beachside property and a shaded lot inside a plantation want different things, which is why we look at the site rather than quoting one turf for the whole island.
How long before I can walk on it?
Stay off it as much as you can for the first two weeks while the roots move down. After that it will take normal use, and a full knit takes a few weeks longer.
Do you offer a warranty?
Three weeks, on the condition that the watering schedule we leave with you is actually followed. We are explicit about that because on sandy ground the watering is genuinely the deciding factor.
Can you do it if I am not on the island?
We can lay it, but something has to water it. If the property has irrigation we will set the schedule. If it does not, we would rather talk about timing than lay turf that is going to die in week two.
